Coffee 101

The Bean Basics

  1. Species: Arabica (higher quality, more flavors) and Robusta (more caffeine, often used in blends)
  2. Processing: Washed, Natural, Honey - each affects flavor differently
  3. Roast Levels: Light, Medium, Dark - influences flavor, acidity, and body

Factors Affecting Taste

  • Origin: Soil, climate, and altitude all impact flavor
  • Roast Date: Fresher is generally better; best within 2-4 weeks of roasting
  • Grind Size: Affects extraction; match to your brewing method
  • Water Quality: Use filtered water for best results
  • Brewing Temperature: Ideal range is 195°F to 205°F (90°C to 96°C)

Storage Tips

  • Store in an airtight container
  • Keep away from light, heat, and moisture
  • Avoid refrigeration (unless for long-term storage of whole beans)
